In Memoriam: Boomer 2008-2021

Boomer was the living definition of true devotion and unconditional love.

Below are some memories from his life that I was so lucky to have been a part of:

Boomer was a traveler, he always went with us on road trips to Colorado, Alabama, Florida, out to Manhattan for the K-State games and to the barn for family gatherings. We probably kept the RV for so long just because of him.

Here’s a picture of him looking out the “Boomer Door” through the RV screen.

He was very social and loved to visit the neighbor dogs, despite my telling him to stick around home. Once he got it in his mind there was no catching him until he was ready to come home on his own volition with his ears curled back and tail tucked, knowing he had displeased me.

I had always wanted a frisbee dog so began throwing them at him and once he started catching them, I started getting him to fetch them. Before long he could run down and catch them as far as I could throw them, jumping into the air!

When we had our black F150, Amy used to take him for rides in the back just to watch his ears fly in the wind as he stuck them out to look around the cab.

Boomer had a great singing voice and loved to howl along with the family. One thing that was sure to get him to break into song was the Price Is Right wheel spin! I even sent this video to them and got a bunch of small gifts back thanking me for the video!

For as big of a dog as he was, weighing nearly 70lbs in his prime, he could curl up into the tightest spaces. If you gave an inch between you, he would find a way to curl up and fit into it just to be close to his family.

As a Weimaraner, his nature was to hate cats, but Boomer was a lover and once we taught him our cats were family, he would let them curl up with him in all sorts of ways.

He was very protective of us always on guard for danger. One time when walking the dirt road 319th with the girls, we came upon a good sized brown snake and before I knew it Boomer had grabbed it and nearly shook it to death! Even as an old man he was still pretty good at shaking snake!

When we started renting our land out for cattle, once he ran the fields rubbing his body in cow poop so badly he had turned green from head to tail. On another occasion he ran into a skunk and had to be bathed in tomato juice!

Boomer loved the pond, not getting into the water-he hated that, but watching us feed the fish! He would watch them swirl and whimper because he couldn’t reach them. He also like to eat fish food when I would let him!.

Here he is with his buddy Bixby.

He never really liked the cold but would endure it for his love of snow! He would eat as much as I would let him and loved catching snowballs that I threw up in the air for him!

Boomer in his youth was one of the fastest dogs I had ever been around. From fence to fence while living in Louisburg I could get my motorcycle up to around 40 and he could always keep up!He jumped up on this bale to look around.

We often called Boomer the scavenger hound! He was always hungry no matter whether he had just eaten or not. He was also very tall so could easily reach the counters and top of the island. When he was around 2, he ate a whole freshly baked large pizza while I had gone down to the basement! Here’s him and Bullet waiting for a treat!

When we left the farm for downtown, Boomer fit right in, becoming a favorite of the security guards. He had the night guard so won over with his big eyes that he often fed him treats until I pulled Boomer away into the elevator.

Speaking of treats, Boomer would do anything for one! He learned tricks quickly and could speak, sit, stay, rollover and even lay down with the motion of my pinky! The only trick I could never teach him was patience, I worked with him a lot to let me sit a treat on his nose and wait, but he always dropped and ate it ASAP!

Here he is after a hike in Colorado!

This rug in our living room was his favorite place to lay and roll around like a dinosaur!

He was a little goofy and managed to do something to make me laugh almost every day. Love that face!

Boomer’s was the first face I would see every morning and the last at night.

He loved his morning face rubs and would come over every time to get some love as I sat at the edge of my bed when getting up for the day

Boomer, you are dearly missed and will forever be in our hearts…until we meet again my old friend.
